Let me first describe the scenery. A sand road in a mountainous area, some 35 people sitting beside it, including me. To our left, after the road takes a bend to the right: a road block with an armoured vehicle, … Continue reading →

Endamên PKKê yên di şer de hatine kuştin.

The weirdest question I have been asked since the PKK announced its withdrawal from Turkey will start on 8 May, is whether the people here in the Southeast of Turkey are feeling ‘victorious’. How little do you know of the … Continue reading →

‘The PKK’, an elderly man says, ‘should not withdraw from Turkey. Why not? Because they are our children!’ He gets the biggest and longest applause from the people attending the first public meeting of the ‘wise people commission’ in Diyarbakir. … Continue reading →

I remember clearly when it hit me. A book! I need to write a book about the Kurdish issue! It just made total sense. What else could I do as an experienced Turkey-based journalist who has been interested in human rights as long as she can remember?

That was in the summer of 2011. Now I’m working on it. Travelling, researching, reading, interviewing, observing. Soon I realised such a project needs a website. A place to share the ongoing work. A place to blog about political and social developments regarding the Kurdish issue. A place to exchange, to discuss.

Since I am a notorious optimist, the book’s angle is not ‘the Kurdish problem’. Instead, I focus on solutions. What is needed for the Kurds of Turkey to feel fully recognized as a people? How can decades of violence come to an end, how can closure for pain be found?

Publication of the book is planned for late 2013, early 2014. Insjallah.
